New Zealand Singer songwriter, Anneka Thwaites, began her musical career in 2003 after
teaming up with fellow-writer Steve Leslie in an acoustic duo called No Jazz. After three years
in No Jazz, performing in and around Marlborough, she embarked on a solo career - a journey
that took her south to further her musical knowledge, studying Commercial Music at
Christchurch’s Jazz School. Having completed her Diploma, she went on to record her debut
album, In The Pink, released in late 2008.
Her music is an eclectic mix that draws on elements of singer songwriter, folk, country and
rock, paired with intimate vocals and reflective lyrics. Backed by a small band of New
Zealand’s leading musicians, In The Pink features the excellent musicianship of Harry
Harrison (session guitarist to Dave Dobbyn, Bic Runga), Richie Pickard on bass (Solaa, Paul
McLaney) and the talented Nick Gaffaney on drums (Goldenhorse, Anika Moa and Cairo Knife
Fight).
Born and bred in Blenheim, her life is reflected in her songs - travels, experiences, values and
people encountered along the way fill her music, giving her songs a sincerity and authenticity
that rings true. Since beginning to write in her early teens, Anneka has gone on to write over
35 songs and gained wide performance experience, playing with bands, trios, duos, and solo.
In 2007 she featured in the Christchurch Arts Festival, backed by the musicians on her album,
and in 2008 featured in Southern Amp, the South Island's biggest music festival. Lately she
has been interviewed on National Radio and performed on TV1s Goodmorning show. This year
3 of her songs will appear in a feature film, Just Like U (to be released in February 2011).
For the last ten years, Anneka has been a self-employed furniture maker, allowing her the flexibility to spend time on her music. Her love of all things
artistic, from music, to woodcarving and painting, and her inbuilt need to be creative can be found in her passion for song writing.
Anneka’s philosophy is simple, "Music has this amazing ability to touch people, inspire them and make them happy - it's a gift to pass on to others!"
